It was a sad Christmas season for the people of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan City, and nearby provinces. Typhoon Sendong poured-out a rain equivalent to one month similar to Typhoon Ondoy that wreaked havoc in Metro Manila and nearby provinces sometime in 2009. As of this writing, there a total of 1,051 killed, the worst in 12 years in the Philippines.

One month after the March 11 tsunami devastated Ofunato and other nearby districts, police departments are again faced with an unusual  growing task and that is of managing lost money. Because hundreds of damaged metal safes, were dragged out of homes and businesses by last month’s tsunami, and is swarming the parking garage at Ofunato police headquarters.

“At first we put all the safes in the station,” said Noriyoshi Goto, head of the Ofunato Police Department’s financial affairs department, which is in charge of lost-and-found items. “But then there were too many, so we had to move them.”

Goto couldn’t specify how many safes are now in  his department and how many has been collected, but says that there are “several hundreds”  more coming in daily.

Pinpointing the owners of lost safes is not an easy job. But identifying large indefinite amounts being found in envelopes, unmarked bags, boxes and furniture is unachievable and hopeless.

Regardless of the gigantic damage Japan is facing now, the Japanese government is very firm with their commitment in advancing the peace process in the Philippines. This afternoon  Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Makoto Katsura will bestow the P44 million worth assistance for the 9 “peace and development projects” in Mindanao. ”The projects include construction of five school buildings, two training centers, a floating school and a post-harvest facility,” as stated by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP).

Isn’t it very good to see and very odd to feel that these people who needed aid and assistance from the world are still the ones helping and extending hands? They are a people of admirable heritage.

Religion does not play a big role in the everyday life of most Japanese people today. We, Christians hope that through these “act of God”  circumstances they will be able to see that there is God and eventually God finds a place in their heart and life as well.

It’s goodbye for Thia Megia in the season 10 of American Idol (2011). The 16-year-old Filipino-American sang “Daniel” at last episode Thursday night (Friday morning in Manila) which people found it boring and unspiring. Thia Megia was elimitated together with contestant Naima Adedapo because the judges used their only save of the season to Casey Abrams last week.

Thia Megia was one of the three top bottom of this weeks competition but she survives though and made it to the next round of the American Idol Season 10. This week’s live performances on American Idol were all about classic Motown tunes for the top 11 contestants. The votes gathered over the two hours after these performances determine the top 10 contestants who will go on a national tour after the Idol season. So measuring up to a Motown classic was quite the difficult task last night.

Thia Megia Made it to Top 12 of American Idol Season 10 (2011)

As of March 14, 2011, only one contestant was removed from the roster of American Idol Season 10, and that’s Ashthon Jones. Many observers are not surprise with this development because Ashthon was obviously the weakest link among the 13 remaining contestants. Thia Megia, the only contestant left with Asian descent, remained a stronger contender courtesy of her golden voice, self confidence, and harmless looks and beauty.

Jason Ivler’s mother Marlene Aguilar challenged Judge Bayani Vargas of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court, Branch 219 to a fistfight during Wednesday’s hearing of the murder case against the former’s son. “Mano-mano na lang tayo, isang round lang judge,” Marlene Aguilar reportedly said. However, Judge Bayani Vargas kept his cool, an awesome gesture, but ordered Ivler’s escorts to bring him back to his cell. Judge Bayani further instructed the escorts to keep Aguilar out of the court. When asked by media about her actions, Marlene Aguilar said that because of an outburst that stemmed from the judges’ denial of their request that Jason Ivler be excused from further attending Wednesday’s hearing.

Now that there are news about the blasts happening in some of Japan’s nuclear plant and after Japan authorities ordered people living within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of the plant to stay inside of their houses and that many has already evacuated, terror were elated and apprehensive of a full-on nuclear meltdown.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company, which runs the plant, said in a news release late Sunday that radiation levels outside that plant remained high. Kyodo, citing the same company, said that there were measurements of 751 microsieverts and 650 microsieverts of radiation early Monday. Both are above the legal limit. What Prime Minister Naoto Kan called the “toughest and most difficult crisis for Japan” since the end of World War II — has national and global repercussions as authorities and scientists debate the dangers of nuclear power.- CNN news
