Many parts of Metro Manila are suffering from water shortage due to the extended El Nino phenomenon. Most of the barangays that are affected are mostly in Caloocan City and Quezon City where residents started panicking by destroying some water pipelines being layed-out hoping to get some water.

The water shortage is unexpected and most of the residents were caught by surprise leaving their water tanks and drums empty. Those working in the offices have no option but to buy water from nearby community and sometimes even from water refilling stations (quite expensive 8 pesos a gallon) for them to have even a little water to take a bath. These has been a scenario for almost 1 week now, while 3 weeks in other areas.

Officials of Maynilad Water claim that this crisis will only be solved if heavy rains started coming. Unfortunately, heavy rains are yet to come because typhoons are seemingly afraid to land for unknown reasons.

There are at least 26 typhoons on the average  coming in the country each year. However, typhoons and heavy rains bring both good and bad news. Bad new is, it caused devastations among farmland crops and kills hundreds of people due to strong winds and heavy floods. Good news is, there will be more than enough water supplies for irrigations and water conglomerates, and electric supplies in the entire grid of Luzon resulting to more productivity and business.

The water shortage that is happening today is one of the worst water crisis happened in the country especially in Manila. It is also he very first crisis that challenges the government of the newly installed president of the country President Noynoy Aquino who is cheduled to deliver his first SONA (State of the Nation Address) on July 30, 2010.

Government officials said that they are very much aware of the seriousness of the water crisis, however, they are a bit optimistic that it is just a temporary thing and will soon be resolved earlier than expected as there has been procedures and methodologies in placed that would cater both short but long term scenario.
