Margarito victory would be bad for boxing: analysts
abs-cbnNEWS.com | October 28, 2010

MANILA, Philippines – For several boxing analysts, Manny Pacquiao’s November 13 fight against Antonio Margarito means so much more than just the Filipino fighter’s attempt to win a record 8th world title.

For them, a Pacquiao loss to the taller and stronger Mexican could affect the sport itself… Read More…

Reporter Michael Marley Talks Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito
Elie Seckbach | BoxingFanHouse | October 28, 2010

Having been involved in boxing from the age of 13, Michael Marley, who has worked with promoter, Don King, knows the sport well.

Marley was on hand for the first day of workouts at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood for WBO welterweight (147 pounds) king Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 knockouts), who will be in a Nov. 13 main event at The Dallas Cowboys of an HBO pay per view televised, Top Rank Promotions WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) title clash during which he will pursue his eighth crown in as many weight classes opposite ex-titlist Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs). You Can Forget About Pacquiao-Mayweather for 2011 Too
Scoop Malinowski | BoxingInsider.Com | October 28, 2010

Floyd Mayweather is a smart boxer and he can see what he’d be in for if Manny Pacquiao’s blazing fists were ever on target for his head – the American fears he will be brutally knocked out.

Mayweather emerged out of hiding recently and gave an interview to his new pals over at Fighthype.com. Again, Mayweather squelched the idea of him fighting Pacquiao in 2011. “If it happens, it happens. If it don’t then it don’t, you know? Life goes on,” he told interviewer Ben Thompson. Read More…

Manny Pacquiao Versus Antonio Margarito: Speed Is Not All That Matters!
Reylan Loberternos | Bukisa.Com | October 27, 2010

Tungod, Inabanga, Bohol – Mexican Antonio “Loaded Hands” Margarito is arguably in the best fighting shape of his career. On the other hand, celebrated boxing trainer Freddie Roach has branded their preparation as the worst training camp they’ve ever had. It seems like Team Margarito has almost everything to be excited about. Pound for pound king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao of the Philippines is apparently behind schedule and is cramming to get himself ready for his toughest assignment to date. Observations by, or shall we say confessions from, Team Pacquiao members have also indicated that the effect of adding a few more pounds to Pacquiao’s lightweight frame has somehow reached the threshold of significance. Pacquiao Watch: The (mis)fortune of Margarito
AsianCorrespondent.Com | October 27, 2010

Poor Antonio Margarito. If his fight with Manny Pacquiao happened before he was knocked almost out of the ring by Shane Mosley, he would have been the heavy favorite heading into their fight. He would have received more than the US$3 million that is reported to be his guaranteed purse. His skills and strengths would be filling the columns of newspapers everywhere.

Instead, Pacquiao’s supposed inescapable retirement and which round Margarito is likely to fall have been the hottest sidebar stories with barely three weeks left before the two clash in Arlington, Texas – home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Margarito’s outcast image – for being caught trying to cheat with his hand wraps against Mosley – is doing him in and it took away his reputation as once one of boxing’s most feared fighters. Read More…

Retirement talk makes Manny Pacquiao chuckle, really
Michael Marley | Examiner.Com | October 27, 2010

HOLLYWOOD—Truth be told, I don’t know if Manny Pacquiao will fight one more time or 10 more times. Frankly, I don’t think he does, either, at this point, a couple of weeks before he fights Antonio Margarito at Cowboys Stadium.

Pacman didn’t really take the bait when I told him he did not look the “shy, retiring type” as he exited Coach Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym Monday evening.

But, as he made the short walk out of his usual post-workout dining spot, Nat’s Thai Restaurant about two hours after dining with fans, friends, brother Bobby and conditioning/nutrition coach Alex Ariza at his side, I did make the 31 year old Fighting Congressmanny laugh about the topic. No Natural Disaster: Why An Antonio Margarito Victory Would Be Good For Boxing
Corey Erdman | QueensberryRules.Com | October 27, 2010

In the months and now weeks leading up to the November 13 WBC junior middleweight title bout between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito, one would think that hardcore boxing fans have collectively ejected their Jean Pascal tapes and opened Blaise Pascal texts instead.

Margarito’s ignorance, false or genuine, to the fact that his handwraps were illegally stuffed with plaster prior to his 2009 loss to Shane Mosley has fans and critics of the sport questioning the morality of licensing and enabling a cheater. In a calendar year in which a neurologically damaged fighter was licensed to take part in a title bout… Read More…

“Goodnight Margarito,” Freddie Roach Says
Erickson Beco | Manila Bulletin | October 27, 2010

“I think that Margarito’s defense is terrible; he’s slow,” says Roach. “Pacquiao’s going to be too fast and Margarito’s defense is going to be too poor, and we will dominate him.” (File photo courtesy of Top Rank/Chris Farina)
MANILA, Philippines — As Manny Pacquiao and his team bid the Philippines goodbye, his trainer Freddie Roach shared what could be his final wish for his ward’s nemesis come November 13.

“Goodnight Margarito,” says the 50-year-old famed trainer as he capped Pacquiao’s session at the mitts, as seen during the primer of HBO Boxing’s “Pacquiao-Margarito 24/7.”

“He (Margarito) says you’re scared of him,” Roach eggs Pacquiao on one part of the program. “Make him cry. Make him cry.” Read More…

Tornado warning in effect: Margarito looks impressive
Brad Cooney | Examiner.com | October 27, 2010

This writer was granted exclusive access to the Antonio Margarito training camp in Oxnard, California. The former world champion arrived at approximately 1PM and quickly got to work. Margarito looked sharp, sparring, speed bag, and stretches were on the agenda for the day.

Margarito trainer Roberto Garcia spoke with the Examiner this afternoon and shared his thoughts on the progress of training camp thus far, “He is right where I want him at this point in camp. We are close to finishing up sparring. The fight is only a few more weeks away, and I could not be happier with Tony’s progress.” Read More…

Roach Lives on Planet Pacquiao

On Saturday night, Manny Pacquiao and his trainer, Freddie Roach touched down in Los Angeles to begin the final leg of their preparations for their November 13th battle with Antonio Margarito at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas. They are three weeks from that fight and Roach isn’t just merely happy to be back in Southern California after more than a month in the Philippines.

“Thrilled,” he told Maxboxing on Monday morning at his familiar haunts of the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California. “The Philippines, the typhoons, distractions, it’s just too much bullsh*t.” Read More…

Camp Antonio Margarito
Steve Kim | doghouseboxing.com | October 26, 2010

In seeing Antonio Margarito last week at the gym, it’s clear that he is in a good place mentally and physically. His disposition and mood are even better than prior to his bout with Miguel Cotto in 2008. And in terms of his physical conditioning, well, let’s just put it this way, if the 150-pound catchweight is an advantage for anhone, it will be him. Not only is margarito still just basically a very big welterweight now, you’re not even forcing him to shave off the last three pounds – which every boxer i’ve spoke with believes are the hardest to cut.

Now, all this may not amount to a hill of beans. Manny Pacquiao may simply prove to be too fast and skilled when it’s all said and done. But unlike a Joshua Clottey, March, Margarito will actually attempt to win… Read More…

Pacquiao sluggish for final day of training in Philippines
Ted Lerner | The RingTV.Com | October 26, 2010

MANILA — Somewhere over the Pacific Ocean this past Saturday night, perhaps shortly after the Philippine Airlines 747 had leveled off at 38,000 feet, and the flight attendants had begun to roll out the opulent service of First Class, Freddie Roach must surely have leaned back in his spacious chair, closed his eyes, taken a deep breath and let out an audible sigh of what can only be described as pure and utter relief.

After nearly one month in the Philippines, the public circus that was Manny Pacquiao training in his home country had mercifully come to an end. Now, Roach was headed home. Now he could look forward to two weeks of intensive, closed-door workouts in the middle of his private domain where he has total control, the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif. Now, he could finally get his fighter to bear down and focus and get him ready for what Roach describes as the most-difficult challenge Pacquiao has ever faced. Read More…

Lem Satterfield | Fanhouse.com | October 25, 2010

FanHouse caught up to four-time Trainer of The Year, Freddie Roach, fresh off of Saturday night’s Los Angeles arrival from the Philippines, where the Hall of Famer has spent the past few weeks preparing seven-division titlist and WBO welterweight (147 pounds) king, Manny Pacquiao, for his HBO pay per view televised, Top Rank Promotions Nov. 13 clash with ex-champion, Antonio Margarito, for the WBC’s vacant junior middleweight (154 pounds) belt.

Roach Eyes KO Win: Margarito Slow, Defense is Terrible
Lem Satterfield | BoxingScene.com | October 25, 2010

Despite reports that Antonio Margarito is in the best shape of his career, Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach expects WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao to win by knockout on November 13, 2010 at Cowboy’s Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Margarito has been training around the clock and his physical condition looks fantastic. The conditioning will not prevent Pacquiao from expoiting Margarito’s defensive flaws, says Roach.

“I think that we will knock Margarito out along the way. I think that Margarito’s defense is terrible. He’s slow. I know that Margarito is supposed to be in great shape for this fight… Read More…

Pacman show upsets Roach
Ronnie Nathanielsz | Inquirer.net | October 24, 2010

MANILA—Manny Pacquiao rocked both Amir Khan and Michael Medina in his final sparring session at the Johhny Elorde Gym in Quezon City yesterday, but still failed to impress trainer Freddie Roach. Roach was evidently looking for something from the pound-for-pound king, and wanted Pacquiao to be more serious, active and focused.

“We didn’t have a great day of sparring today but he looked good in spots when he wanted to,” Roach told the Inquirer after Pacquiao went three rounds with Medina, took on WBA light welterweight champion Khan over four rounds and had Medina return for another three rounds. Read More…

Manny regains speed, power ‘He looked sharp, much better’
Ronnie Nathanielsz and Roy Luarca | Inquirer.net | October 22, 2010

Slowly but surely, pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is getting used to the extra weight. Although already bulked up for his showdown with Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13, Pacquiao still put up a masterful 11 rounds of sparring against three foes at the Shape Up Gym yesterday at the close of his training camp in Baguio City.

“It (sparring) went okay,” Pacquiao told GMA News in Filipino. “My speed, power and footwork are back.” Forced to gain at least three pounds, Pacquiao appeared sluggish in sparring last Saturday, according to Top Rank chief Bob Arum. Read More…

Pacquiao-Margarito May End Up Like Judah-Tsyzu
Kenneth Ragpala | Filipino Boxing Journal | October 22, 2010

Come November 13th, seven-division world champion Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) will strut his wares against the hard-hitting mauler Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs). Both guys come forward. Both boxers are high-output volume punchers. Aside from the size and reach, the obvious difference is that Pacquiao is an elite speedster while Margarito is a topnotch power puncher. Their upcoming bout is another case of speed versus power, no doubt about it. Read More…

“Pacquiao’s Going to Eat my Punches” — Margarito

MANILA, Philippines — Former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito, in the thick of his training for a much awaited return to the boxing ring against Filipino slugger Manny Pacquiao next month, refuses to get distracted by rumors of his foe’s struggles in his own camp.

The 32-year-old boxer from Tijuana, Mexico is confident that come fight night, the bout will end with his arms raised in victory.

“Pacquiao won’t stand up to my punches,” said Margarito (38 wins, 6 losses, 27 knockouts) in an interview quoted by John Martinez of Boxscore News. “He’s been shook by smaller fighters than me and he will find out the hard way that his punches won’t hurt me.” Read More…

Don’t Believe the Hype; Pacquiao Doing Just Fine in Training
Danny Howard | The FightHype | October 21, 2010

Reports have been popping up from multiple sources making public statements that Manny Pacquiao is looking bad in preparation for his fight with Antonio Margarito next month.Freddie Roach has said it, even Bob Arum has flown down to the Philippines to “investigate”, and reports keep coming in that Pacquiao just isn’t quite as good as normal. To all the Pacfans who might be panicking…relax! This is just a ploy to get people talking since all the news has been coming from the Margarity camp.

With all things considered, why would a trainer, or a promoter for that matter, say that their fighter is looking bad at all? Read More…

Arum: Margarito got it all wrong
Dennis Principe | Manila Standard | October 21, 2010

BAGUIO CITY—If the remark of promoter Bob Arum holds water, then Mexican Antonio Margarito may be preparing a wrong fight plan the whole time.

Known for his astuteness in promoting marquee fights, Arum initially said he was told Margarito has been sparring some good number of rounds against four different fighters with similar left-hand stance in his training camp in Oxnard, California.

But when asked about his assessment of Pacquiao’s latest training, Arum gave a much gracious remark to his prized Filipino fighter that in some ways belittle the chances of the Mexican champion. Read More…

This time, Arum heaps praises on Pacquiao
GMANews.TV | October 21, 2010

A letdown the last time, Manny Pacquiao made sure he would leave a lasting impression on Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.

The world’s top pound-for-pound fighter rocked all three sparmates he faced late Tuesday, with Glen Tapia nursing a bloodied nose after the action-packed rounds that wowed a small audience at the Shape Up gym inside the Cooyesan Hotel in Baguio. Among those who witnessed Pacquiao’s return to championship form was Arum himself.

Arum was watching at ringside when the 31-year-old Pacquiao relentlessly attacked and bombed Tapia, Medina and Amir Khan, the reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) light-welterweight champion, at an extended sparring session that started what trainer Freddie Roach earlier referred to as the “toughest two weeks” of training for the Filipino’s Nov. 13 title fight with Mexican Antonio Margarito. Can Pacquiao vs. Margarito meet Arum’s prediction of 1.3 million pay per views?
Scott Heritage | Examiner.com | October 21, 2010

Staying true to the long storied tradition of promoters making very optimistic predictions when it comes to the amount of pay per views that their events will sell, Bob Arum earlier this week made a bold prediction regarding the November junior middleweight showdown between Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito.

Speaking to the Manila Bulletin, Arum stated that he is expecting pay per view sales of well over 1.3 million, which is the amount that Pacquiao sold against Oscar De La Hoya.

Obviously Arum’s predictions before an event are always going to be very high, and few industry insiders initially had the bout selling much over a million. Mainly because the main event isn’t expected to be a close one and that Margarito’s reputation with some of the fans is still in question. Read More…

Roach’s bonus still up for grabs
Mark Simon Vincent C. Giongco | Inquirer.Net

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines—The several times Glenn Tapia and Michael Medina have tried to knock down pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao for the one-thousand-dollar incentive during sparring sessions also represents the number of times they have failed. “I’ve been trying,” admitted Medina.

Trainer Freddie Roach has always dangled a lucrative $1,000 (roughly P47,000) bonus to sparring partners who can knock out Pacquiao in training sessions. With the Pacman’s career in its latter stages, Roach still has the tidy sum in his possession. Read More…

Pacquiao acts as ‘father of the bride’ in adviser’s wedding
abs-cbnNEWS.com

MANILA, Philippines — Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao assumed the role of the bride’s father in the wedding of his Canadian adviser, Michael Koncz, Tuesday night.

The 7-division boxing champion escorted Filipino-American Rachel Batimana to the altar in the very private wedding held at Baguio Manor Hotel, Baguio City.

After a rigorous training that day, Pacquiao himself fetched the bride from her room.
The renowned boxer eventually became the night’s host following the wedding. He entertained the guests by singing and dancing along with his MP band.

Among Koncz’s guests were Pacquiao’s wife Jinkee, boxing promoter Bob Arum, Arum’s daughter Dena Duboef, and Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson. Read More…

Pacman dominates bigger sparmates

Manila Standard Today – Based on what an iconic observer inside the closed-door sparring session saw yesterday, a Manny Pacquiao moving up in weight will have no problem dealing with bigger guys.

Pacquiao extends stay in typhoon ravaged Baguio

PhilBoxing – Whatever Manny wants, Manny gets. Even in the matter of going back to Manila from his almost one month of altitude training here, its Manny Pacquiao’s wish that prevailed.

To the consternation of trainer Freddie Roach whose decision to leave Baguio City yesterday was again overruled by the seven-division champ’s desire to stay one more day here for reason only he knew.

Team Pacquiao will instead leave Thursday after another day of sparring at the Shape Up Boxing Gym at the Cooyessan Hotel. If it’s any consolation though, Roach said the postponement can also benefit Pacquiao as it will give him the opportunity to box with Amir Khan for several more rounds. Read More…

Manny Pacquiao Embraces Training, Preps for Margarito

Wine, women and song, not to mention the money, power and glory.

Yes, it can all be enjoyed if you happen to be one of the world’s top boxing champions. But to get there you have to pay your dues and keep on paying them. Boxing isn’t like other sports where you practice a couple of hours a day during the season. It’s more of a lifestyle, and the more you get out of shape between fights the more you have to get into shape leading up to your next bout (see Ricky Hatton).

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines knows all about this concept, and he’s putting the finishing touches on a grueling eight-week training camp while he prepares to take on Antonio Margarito for the vacant WBC super welterweight championship Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Read More…

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao vs Antonio “The Tornado” Margarito . Latest News and Updates as of July 24, 2010 8:00pm Asia Pacific TimeZone.

manny pacquiaoLet’s now agree that the Manny Pacquiao – Floyd Mayweather megafight at least this year won’t happen. We already read articles and heard comments from many boxing writers about Floyd Mayweather scared to fight Manny Pacquiao and vice versa. I think it’s about time to move on and focus on Manny Pacquiao facing Antonio Margarito in November 13 but the place is yet to be decided. This is according to Top Rank Owner and Promoter of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito.

antonio margaritoMany fight fans however are having second thoughts and speculations on the reason behind why Antonio Margarito is the anointed one to face Manny Pacquiao. Some said that what matters most for now is the money that will be raked in by Bob Arum and his Top Rank. Arum will not struggle much on the money that will be put in the table to make the fight happen because Pacquiao and Margarito are under the same promotional outfit – Top Rank.

As for the venue of the Pacquiao – Margarito fight, Arum is hoping to get MGM Grand should Margarito get the lifting of his suspended license in the State of Nevada. In any case, there is a huge coliseum in Monterey Mexico that can accommodate up to 22,000 boxing fans. Another possible venue would be in Abu Dhabi, Dubai where some group already submitted formal proposal but Arum is having second thoughts about it. Arum hinted that Dubai is the last recourse as venue for this megafight.

The November 13 proposed fight will be again a significant one for Manny Pacquiao trying to get his 8th world title in 8 different divisions, a rare chance to achieve by an athlete. Pacquiao is currently busy doing services after winning a congressional seat in Philippine congress last May 10, 2010 national election.

Manny Pacquiao is currently holding a record of 51-3-2, 38 KO, while Margarito holds 38-6, 27 KO record. Both fighters will be 32 years old entering the ring on November 13. Margarito has the advantage in height (5’11″) against Pacquiao at 5’6.5″. Margarito is 6″ reach advantage (73″) over Pacquiao who only has 67″ reach. Margarito is a natural middleweight while Pacquiao started at flyweight division. Coach Freddie Roach however already stated it strong that nobody can defeat Manny Pacquiao for now.

Many experts are saying that Pacquiao is such a phenomenal athlete – a rare of a kind. Manny is now in the 5th least of highest paid international athlete.

The vacant WBC Jr. Middleweight title is in the line in this fight according to Arum.

  2. Margarito is a big welterweight with a chin like a fire hydrant. It would be a serious challenge for Pacquiao, much more difficult of a fight than the DeLa Hoya fight. I would think Margarito would be the heavy favorite, but then again I thought DeLa Hoya would pose problems for Manny, and I was dead wrong. Pacquiao destroy DeLa Hoya with an ease that was terrifying. I think Manny Pacquiao is ready for a real welterweight, but I think it had better be someone other than Margarito. Margarito for me is slow like Dela Hoya so I guess Pacman will have a chance. Yes Marga is big, strong and durable but he can only be effective if he can catch Manny inside the ring. A prime Dela Hoya for me would easily beat a prime Marga but a prime Dela Hoya would have a hard time with Pac Man if I based it on Dream Match.

  3. Could well be fight of the year, so far Pacquiao has shown he has never been afraid to stand toe to toe with every fighter he has faced.

Could he do this with a man of Margaritto stature.

That alone will be something to behold, small 5’6 guy fighting a 5’11 guy outweighing him by over a stone but the little guy is not just out boxing him he overpowering him, standing there and trading and making Marg take the backward steps and folding under the pressure.

Pacquiao is too goo for his own good, if Juan Diaz said he was going to take on Margaritto people would say it was a mammoth task and Diaz could well take a beating. This is the same Diaz who the same people say Pacquiao ducked.

This is going to be Pacquiao toughest fight and the Pacquiao vs Margarito could be FOTY

  4. Manny vs Antonio this is a great challenge for the both of them. Both are at the peaks of their career. Antonio is good, but Manny has already proven that he is unbeatable, fearless, skillful and a great giant killer. Antonio is the last great Mexican world champion standing. When Manny beats Margarito like other great Mexican champions, he will be considered the best in the world. With this fight there is no question that Manny will shatter Oscars vs Floyd’s record ppv of 2.44 million. Its time to shock the world again. I would think that Pacquiao would take early rounds with his speed and proven ability to get inside bigger men with footwork and head movement. However Pacquiao has been hurt by fighters with far less power than Margarito like Juan Manuel Marquez and eventually Manny would slow down or Antonio would catch him and overwhelm the smaller man. I haven’t seen margarito fights but If he’s that good. I don’t think pacman will back down a fight against margarito. Pacquiao is the kind of fighter who likes to fight stronger opponents. He likes to be the underdog. Just like when he first fought barrera when he (barrera) was on his prime (2003).The challenge like this will make pacman more excited more motivated to train harder to become the best boxer that he can be.
